Cayuga County administrator J. Justin Woods, lawmakers and county department officials met in a special session on Monday night to discuss the recommendations in the 96-page consultant’s report on county operations. The meeting was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but was postponed when the wind storm knocked out the power at the county building.
Former legislature chair Keith Batman was one of the driving forces behind the CGR report.
One of the recommendations would bring several departments under one umbrella by forming a department of public works.
Batman feels other departments can be consolidated as well.
He’s not sure if the recommendations in the report could result in immediate savings for the county.
Woods reported that many departments are short staffed and there is a shortage of working space. It is recommended that the probation department hire two more probation officers to lessen the case load on current officers.
