February’s unemployment rate in Cayuga County was marginally higher. The state labor department report released on Tuesday showed for the for the second month in a row the jobless rate rose a tenth of a point, ending February at 6.5%. That’s above both the state (5.1%) and national (4.4%) averages and puts the county 33rd out of the 62 NY counties.
The number of unemployed county residents remained flat at 2300, while the number of employed dropped by 700, with just over 33,000 people having jobs last month. There were 200 more people working in government jobs last month, while private sector jobs dipped by 600 to 18,100.
