A Wayne County 9-1-1 Center dispatcher is credited with helping deliver a baby over the telephone this morning.
Shortly before 9 a.m., Dispatcher Matthew Bixby received a phone call from an individual in Palmyra stating his girlfriend was in labor. Dispatcher Bixby performed Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions over the phone to help the caller deliver the child.
The baby and mother were transported to the hospital by Finger Lakes Ambulance.
Dispatcher-assisted child births are rare in Wayne County, with only a very small number happening each year. All dispatchers in Wayne County are trained to National/International Academies of Emergency Dispatch standards and certified as Emergency Medical Dispatchers, prepared to respond when needed.
“The efforts of Supervisor Bixby are a fine example of the excellent service provided every day by all of the team members in the 911 Center in Wayne County. I am proud of Matt and the entire dispatch team that we have at the Wayne County 911 Center” said Greg DeWolf, 911 Operations Manager. “We wish the family and newborn baby all the best.”
