The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam that is being reported in the region.
Scammers are calling stating they are a deputy sheriff from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, or another law enforcement agency, and claiming there’s a warrant out for your arrest for not appearing for jury duty, or another court proceeding. The scammer claims you need to pay a fine through an online system they mention, or you will be arrested. What is alarming to the sheriff’s office about this new scam is that the number that appears on your Caller ID could actually display their name or another police agency’s phone number.
A reminder that law enforcement will never call you requiring you to pay online for a warrant against you and never give out personal identifying information over the telephone.
