The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the community to a complaint that was received on February 4 regarding a telephone call to a county resident from an individual claiming to be a representative from the Civil Processing Division of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. The caller alleged that a civil fee had been court-ordered and must be paid by a prepaid Visa card from a local drug store to avoid further legal action.
Sheriff David Gould says the Sheriff’s Office does not contact individuals by phone about court-ordered judgements. The Sheriff’s Office will not ask for payment using a prepaid debit/credit card or wire transfer, nor will they ask for a credit card number over the phone.
Disregard any call from someone demanding cash payment and do not give out personal identifying information over the phone, unless you are sure you know the reason and to whom you are giving information to.
