A critical incident involving a veteran ended safely last night.
The Auburn Police Department’s Emergency Response Team and hostage negotiator, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office ERT and State Police all responded to a call from the suicidal vet around 11:30 last night. The unidentified person contacted the Veterans Affairs Crisis Hotline and said he or she would harm him or herself and anyone, including law enforcement, who tried to help.
Chief Shawn Butler tells Finger Lakes News Radio it was important to ask for help from the Sheriff’s Office and State Police.
After more than two hours the negotiator was able to establish contact and the person was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation.
Chief Butler says the identity of the veteran and the location of the incident are not being released.
During a search of the home following the incident officers found numerous loaded weapons, magazines and ammunition.
