The 36 year old Mennonite father and his 18 month old son reported missing from their home in Stanley Thursday afternoon were found in Virginia Friday. Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says they received a phone call from the Sentera Regional Health Center in Harrisonburg, VA, around 12:30 this afternoon stating Leroy Newswanger and Glenn David Newswanger were there.
Staff felt the elder Newswanger’s behavior was unusual and they became suspicious. They searched online for Newswanger in New York and discovered news articles on the missing child. Povero said father and son are doing fine.
Sheriff Povero addressed if any charges will be filled against Leroy Newswanger.
Glenn David is now in the custody of Child Protective Services with arrangements being made for his return to New York. During the course of their investigation, Sheriff Povero said they developed information Leroy Newswanger had expressed an issue with the federal government that he wanted to express directly. That led them to focus their search for the two between the Finger Lakes and Washington D.C.
