Among the water quality grants announced in this week’s round of Regional Economic Development Council funding is one-point-one million to protect Owasco Lake. The money was awarded to the Nature Conservancy.
The money will be used for plantings and other structures to help filter out the nutrients that flow into the lake and cause blue-green algae blooms. The time period during which the blooms appear and their toxicity have both increased in recent years. The Nature Conservancy must raise 375 thousand dollars of its own as a match to receive the state grant.
