A Savona resident is being called a hero after a fire broke out at a home in the Steuben County village Tuesday afternoon.
State Police say firefighters were called to a home on Main Street shortly before 4 o’clock after it reportedly filled up with smoke. A nearby neighbor went into the home and rescued two children, ages 6 and 2. The kids were allegedly left home alone. The children’s mother, 34 year old Khristie Dearmitt, arrived on scene shortly after firefighters started to douse the flames. She was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Firefighters say food left to cook on the stove was the cause of the fire. The identity of the neighbor that rescued the kids has not been released.
