A 23 year old man that worked as a temporary staff member at Cornell University has been sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for attempting to rape a woman in the city of Ithaca this summer.
As part of a plea deal agreed to in October, Debanhi Gerardo Garcia-Gonzalez was also sentenced to 15 years of post-release supervision and will have to register as a sex offender before likely being deported back to his native country of Mexico. Garcia-Gonzalez was accused of entering a 25 year old woman’s room around 3 a.m. July 22nd while she was sleeping. He then threw her phone out of her reach and attempted to rape her. The woman was sexually assaulted and suffered injuries when she attempted to fight back.
Investigators say the victim knew Garcia-Gonzalez.
