Members of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office had a face to face meeting on Monday morning with local NAACP and diversity group members over their concerns that a landlord and tenant dispute last month was a hate crime.
Sheriff David Gould tells Finger Lakes News Radio at this point, the incident does not rise to the level of a hate or bias crime.
He adds the investigation is ongoing and the decision could change in the face of any new evidence.
50-year old Eric Simmons of Owasco was arrested and charged with multiple offenses following the incident at a home in the Town of Owasco. Simmons is described as a friend of the landlord.
