The following statement was released Monday night by Congressman Tom Reed:
Sen. Schumer and Gov. Cuomo are throwing everything but the kitchen sink in a desperate attempt to protect their rich friends in New York City. Pedaling all kinds of crazy fear tactics, they have truly lost sight of how to help hardworking New Yorkers. The truth is that the compromise on the state and local property tax will protect 99 percent of taxpayers upstate,” said Rep. Tom Reed (NY-23).
“This bill means people in our region will be able to keep $1600 of their hard earned money rather than allowing the federal government to take it from them as the government does today,” said Reed. “That is a down payment on a car for a factory worker in Hornell, daycare for a young family in Elmira and would allow some seniors to visit their grandkids in North Carolina who were forced to leave New York because of the unreasonable tax burden.”
New Yorkers are subject to some of the highest state taxes in the country and Reed has repeatedly called on the governor and senator to lower the tax rates at both the state and federal level. “It is shameful that both Schumer and Cuomo want to keep the behemoth boot of tax burdens on the backs of our hardworking New Yorkers. Both have two lead feet when it comes to pushing fear and higher taxes down the throats of hardworking New Yorkers.”
