Work to remove asbestos in the historic Schines Theater in downtown Auburn is slated to begin on Monday.
In June, the City of Auburn approved $800,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for the asbestos remediation. The Cayuga County Arts Council and Syracuse-based Bowers Development are partnering in the project that is expected to be completed in mid-January. Council Director Ed Onori tells Finger Lakes News Radio the entire theater will be sealed to keep the asbestos from escaping.
Once the remediation work is finished the Schines is slated to be transformed into a civic center. Renovations include installation of a glass display case at the lobby, handicapped restrooms, tiered seating area, and new concessions and bar area.
The Schines Theater restoration is also included in the 2017 round of Central NY Regional Economic Development Council plan and has been designated a priority project. Funding announcements are expected in December.
