The heavy rain this week is causing problems for Auburn’s sewage treatment system. Thursday morning, nearly 600,000 gallons of sewage that had been partially treated without disinfection were released into Northbook Creek at John Walsh Boulevard. It’s the second large discharge this week, and with more heavy rain falling it’s expected more sewage could be discharged.
Municipal Utilities Director Seth Jensen tells Finger Lakes News Radio there is a minimal health risk.
He adds the city infrastructure is partially responsible.
Jensen adds residents who have sump pumps that drain into the sewer system are contributing to the problem.
