Clare C. Ring, born to James Joseph and Mary Agnes Cunning in Bennington, Vt., in 1922. Clare was the youngest, with 3 older sisters and a brother. Showing an early aptitude for numbers, she enjoyed the company of her father while bookkeeping for his business. She would graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Trinity College in Burlington, Vt. While there, she competed for her college basketball team and became Concert Mistress for her college orchestra. She was recruited from Trinity to General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. There she would meet and marry her husband and life’s love, John Ring from Scotia, N.Y. Together they would raise four children. In the early 1970s Clare endured a period where she lost her husband, both parents and her youngest daughter in short succession, requiring her to support and guide her young adult children through this difficult time. Drawing strength from her faith, she would prove to be a capable and loving single parent and a successful career woman. She would retire in 1987 from her position as Credit and Collections Manager at St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady. She began an active and new life including abundant family time, world travel and a new found pursuit, golf. Clare came to Penn Yan in 2007 where she was a faithful patron of St. Michael’s Church and a skilled bridge player with her newfound friends at the Moose. She will be missed by family and friends as strong, humble and stylish, with extraordinarily soft hands and a wry sense of humor behind beautiful blue Irish eyes.
She was predeceased by her siblings; her husband, John; and her daughter, Maureen. She is survived by her children Kathleen Ring of Penn Yan, Kevin (and Kathy) Ring of Penn Yan, and James Ring of Beverly, Mass.; her grandchildren Kristopher (and Susan) Czachor of LaCrascenta, California, Chelsea (and Michael) Ring Bolles of Saratoga, N.Y., and Allison Ring of Beverly, Mass.; and three great-grandchildren Quinn Hannah Czachor, Lucas Henry Czachor and Claire Catherine Bolles. For the past 15 years she has been beloved as the Cunning family matriarch to her 5 nieces and nephew, and their children and grandchildren.
