Tax reform’s been a big subject this past week, and it’s been something we’ve talked about since a bunch of rowdy Bostonians turned a harbor into a giant teapot. We grumble about too many taxes, high rates of taxes, tax loopholes, confusing tax codes, too many tax forms…heck, the only tax we don’t complain about are the ones we used to use to put up posters on our bedroom walls when we were kids. The idea of simplifying taxes and cutting them isn’t a bad one, but what a lot of people forget is that taxes are like putting hot sauce on your chicken wings…you can add, but you can’t subtract. If you take away tax revenue, you need to cut spending to achieve a balance, and because government’s oversight is about as clear as a three-dimensional quadratic equation, they propose cutting programs and subsidies instead of trimming the REAL fat that comes in the form of ridiculous overspending and redundancies….anybody remember those famous hundred dollar hammers that the Pentagon bought back in the day? No matter how you try to divvy up tax reform, somewhere, somebody who has obscene amounts of money is going to find a loophole or a catch that allows them to either keep what they’ve got, pay less, or make more…it’s an imperfect science. To get something, you’re going to need to GIVE something…and I don’t see anybody who’s in a giving mood right now in that regard.
