There have generally been three reactions to the recent national anthem protests that began in the NFL and have since worked their way down to the youth sports level.
The first and sadly, the minority opinion has been that protest is our first amendment right and should be protected and defended.
The second is the flag-waving pseudo-patriotic opinion that protest is Un-American and should not be tolerated. This, in a nation founded by protest. If Fox News had existed in 1776, it would have been strongly pro-King of England.
The third, equally sad, is that it’s OK to protest, but it should be done quietly and respectfully, without being disruptive. Protest is, by its nature, supposed to be disruptive. It is supposed to effect change in entrenched beliefs. It it’s quiet and kept over in its own little corner, it won’t accomplish anything.
Many people are eager to get this unpleasantness behind us and ask “when will it end?” The answer is, when all Americans have the equal rights their Constitution tells them they have.
