Ithaca Police issued 108 tickets in responded to Acting Chief of Police Pete Tyler’s initiative that allowed extra patrols to address distracted driving offenses over an 8 day period this month.
These patrols were be looking for texting-while-driving violations and illegal use of a cell phone while driving. The patrols were conducted at random times during the 8 days. Offenders were issued a ticket, and can now opt into the new Distracted Driving Diversion Program if they are eligible to do so.
Tyler added the extra patrols speak to the department’s commitment to getting ahead of the problem and enabling folks to see just how dangerous texting and talking while driving is.
