The Auburn Fire Department is close to becoming a Department of Veterans Affairs apprenticeship program facility. As part of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the VA provides financial assistance to veterans who want to go to college or pursue a trade or on the job training.
Chief Joe Morabito tells Finger Lakes News Radio it was firefighter Chris Wood, who served in the Air Force and is currently a member of the Air National Guard, who brought up the idea.
Lt. Sam Giannettino says the department has been approved by the state Division of Veterans’ Affairs and is waiting for the final seal of approval from the federal VA.
Qualified firefighters who served in the military would be eligible to receive benefits for 5,000 hours worked over 32 months once they begin training.
