Leon A. “Rusty” Darling, 92, of Moravia, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 16, 2017, at Oak Hill Nursing Home, Ithaca, following a brief illness.
Rusty was born March 25, 1925, in Noxen, Pennsylvania, the son of Frank and Clara Darling. He was an Army Veteran of World War II serving in the ETO from 1941 to 1945 and again with the Medical Collecting Unit from 1946-1950. A resident of Moravia most of his life, he was employed with the NYSDOT until his retirement.
Outside of his family, Rusty especially enjoyed visiting people who were shut in, in the hospital or nursing homes. He was an encouragement and an inspiration to many. He is survived by two daughters Jeanette (John) Knuutila of Newfield and Beth (Stephen) Stoddard of Port Crane; one son-Leon W. (Linda) Darling of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at Christ United Methodist Church, Moravia. Rev. John Aukema will be officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Indian Mound Cemetery. A reception will follow at the church’s fellowship hall. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Wade Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Moravia.
