The 22 year old Ithaca man accused of shooting a person in the Ithaca Commons in April has pleaded guilty to assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Yakez Cornett, Senior was indicted earlier this year on assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and attempted murder charges. Police were called to the Commons after gunshots were fired in front of the Silky Jones nightclub shortly after 1 a.m. April 9th.
The victim suffered a shattered femur. According to the Tompkins County District Attorney’s office, the victim was shot once in the leg and four times in the back while laying on the ground. The bullets in his back will remain because they are too risky to remove.
Cornett has never given a motive for the shooting. He will be sentenced next month.
