This is Direct Support Professionals Week across the country, a chance to recognize the more than 100 thousand DSP’s providing support to New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Tammy Slayton from the ARC of Seneca Cayuga said on Wednesday’s Finger Lakes Morning News agencies like the ARC have a difficult time filling what are considered entry level positions with entry level wages, even though Gov. Cuomo approved $55 Million in the state budget for pay raises.
DSP recognition week also gives agencies like the ARC a chance to get the word out about the difficulty support agencies have recruiting new staff.
Slayton added ARC consistently runs 20 to 25 percent below its desired DSP staff level, which puts added stress on those who are working long hours caring for others.
