Area Records was recognized last week by the Geneva Business Improvement District for being in business 40 years. The BID Board of Directors voted unanimously to celebrate the music store’s long service to the Geneva Community.
Store owner Mikel George is preparing for a going out of business sale which will start September 15th. All CDs, vinyl records, and music equipment will be discounted.
Mr. George was given a plaque to commemorate Area Record’s long tenure in the Business District. BID Board member Joe Fragnoli of Super Casuals presented the award and stated that the recognition was well deserved. BID Board President David Linger quipped that Super Casuals is a relatively new business, having been started in 1978, one year after Area Records.
Mr. George posed for a picture with two of his long-time employees and was appreciative of the recognition. He expects the business to wind down before the end of the year. Mr. George looks forward to spending more time with his grandchildren but will miss his customers and daily routine. He did say that he will continue to be a regular downtown and may well keep his daily routine of walking to the Post Office.
Following the ceremony Mr. George went back to serving customers. For a few more weeks people can still enjoy the service and deep knowledge of this local institution. Many in the community will miss the special experience of browsing in a store dedicated to music that simply cannot be duplicated on the internet.
