The Jets have the ball, fourth and two at about their own 40 with nine minutes and change left yesterday against the Bills. You’ve got a slim chance of coming back to win the game if you convert this first down. On fourth and two, you’ve got about a 50/50 chance. Nope. In comes the punt team. Later, they have another fourth down with about four minutes left. Not much chance you’ll make it, but if you do, you keep your fading hopes alive. They punt again and, in a related story, lost the game.
Why don’t coaches make every last ditch effort to win the game? Because if they go for it and don’t make it, they are criticized. If they go the safe way and punt, the onus goes on the players. I’ll guarantee you not a single member of the New York sports media questioned the coach on why he wimped out.
Note: It turns out he was criticized. There may be hope.
Also, please fix the replay system. If all of us at home can see in two seconds what the correct call is, there’s no reason we have to delay the game for two minutes.
