Wallace E. ‘Skip’ Slayton Jr., 67, of Hardenburg Ave., Auburn, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, Aug. 25, 2017, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was a life resident of Auburn, the son of the late Wallace and Betty O’Brien Slayton. ‘Skip’ as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was a retired Navy veteran, having served on the USS Saratoga. Skip also served two stints in Vietnam. He received numerous medals while serving our country honorably. He last served as a Drug Detector Dog Handler. The only thing Skip was more proud of than his military service was being a Papa to his several grandchildren. After his military service he worked for many years as a paving operator, having been employed by several local companies. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially, rooting on his favorite, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Skip always had a beer in hand and enjoyed sharing a story or two with his friends and family. Skip could tell a story a hundred times and never tell it the same way twice. Once you met Skip Slayton, you never forgot it, as he always left a lasting impression.
In addition to his parents, Skip was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Bacon.
Contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Finger Lakes, 1130 Corporate Dr., Auburn, NY 13021.
