Geneva-The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing (MSWSPN) celebrated the commencement of their 82nd graduating class on August 3, 2017. The class of 15 students is now eligible to take their Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) exam. Graduates include Rocio Andrade, Newark; Joshua Chapin, Rushville; Shinera Crockton, Canandaigua; Theresa Fletcher, Geneva; Karen Godfrey, Livonia; Yolanda Hammonds, Rochester; Emma LaDelfa, Palmyra; Colleen McElroy, Cayuga; Joelyn Osipovitch, Macedon; Aaron Parkhurst, Penn Yan; Stephine Reaves, Rochester; Tiffany Shores, Waterloo; Brittany Szachta, Palmyra; Kraig Woodard, Dundee and Alexandra Wooster, Walworth.
Awards were given to many outstanding graduates:
Theresa Fletcher received the Fidelia Harman Memorial Award for highest academic achievement in nursing courses;
Emma LaDelfa and Stephine Reaves received the Marion S. Whelan Memorial Award recognizing a graduate nurse(s) exemplifying the characteristics of dedication to nursing and self-discipline which were not only a part of Miss Whelan’s life, but are exemplified every day in the professionalism and dedication shown by the nurses in the Finger Lakes Health Education Department and throughout the organization;
Tiffany Shores received the Kathleen “Rita” Talbert Memorial Award given in memory of Rita, a 1963 graduate of this program. Tiffany reflects the attributes that Rita demonstrated in her life. Rita showed willpower and determination in achieving her goal of entering the nursing profession despite obstacles that would have stopped others from pursuing their dream for demonstrating willpower and determination in achieving her goal despite obstacles;
Shinera Crockton and Rocio Andrade received the MSWSPN Service Award for outstanding service in medical/surgical nursing;
Alexandra Wooster and Brittany Szachta received the Alice Bergstresser Memorial Award given to the graduate practical nurse(s) for exemplifying the characteristics Alice portrayed in her everyday living; namely, determination, dedication and compassion;
Aaron Parkhurst received the Bell Family Award, recognizing a graduate practical nurse for demonstrating perseverance and commitment by pursuing all available academic resources to achieve success in the nursing program;
Kraig Woodard and Joshua Chapin received the Catherine J. Loudin Achievement Award, honoring the graduate practical nurse(s) most exemplifying the values of Finger Lakes Health during his or her educational training;
Karen Godfrey received the William J. DiCicco Memorial Award honoring the graduate practical nurse exhibiting the attributes that Bill demonstrated throughout his life: devotion to family, a strong work ethic, the value of education and love of country;
Yolanda Hammonds received the Advocate Award recognizing the graduate practical nurse that has shown the qualities most important to healthcare delivery; caring, quality, professionalism and passion;
Joelyn Osipovitch received the MSWSPN Student Achievement Award, given to the graduate who, in this year of education, demonstrated consistent growth through his or her awareness of patient needs and his or her achievement in nursing performance;
Karen Godfrey received the Thomas I. Whelan Memorial Award. The recipient of this award each year is chosen not by faculty, but by their fellow classmates and is given to the graduate practical nurse who has shown in his or her life and in his or her nursing the school motto “Faith-Hope-Charity”;
Theresa Fletcher received The National Association of Licensed Practical Nurses Honor Society Achievement Award for exemplary work in achieving at least a 3.0 GPA in the prescribed course of work during her practical nursing education;
Theresa Fletcher received The Practical Nurse Licensing and Examination Award established by the MSWSPN Class of 2007 and supported by each subsequent graduating class. This award is given to the graduate who exemplifies, through written illustration, the personal commitment and dedication needed to travel the journey that nursing school presents;
Colleen McElroy received The BETTY MONTAGLIONE MEMORIAL AWARD given to the graduate practical nurse that chose nursing as a second career. Colleen reflects Betty’s dedication to the elderly ensuring compassionate and skilled care.
The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing, one of only three hospital-based nursing programs in New York State, was founded in 1956. Since that time, it has graduated over 1,600 nurses. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2017 for their outstanding achievements.
