Cayuga County Environmental Health Director Eileen O’Connor thinks county and local officials are more prepared this year to deal with harmful algal blooms in Owasco Lake.
She briefed Auburn City Council on Thursday on the plan to increase testing of water samples.
She tells Finger Lakes News Radio staff at the Auburn and Owasco water treatment plants will be keeping an eye out for blooms that might try to invade the water systems.
The temporary filtration systems installed last month are being tested on a regular basis so they’ll be ready if they’re needed as we head into the height of the bloom season. O’Connor is hopeful the cool, wet weather this summer will reduce the chances of a repeat of last summer’s algae crisis, but they’re prepared in the event that’s not the case.
