An incident earlier this summer in Yates County involving a State Trooper is under an internal investigation.
The Chronicle-Express reports on June 29th, a Trooper assigned to the region on a temporary basis conducted a traffic stop for a seatbelt violation in Penn Yan. It’s alleged he asked two back seat passengers for identification, which is a violation of a 2014 directive from Governor Andrew Cuomo and State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman instructing all State Police to refrain from asking about immigration status when investigating non-criminal activities. The two were then allegedly held at the Trooper barracks in Dundee for Border Patrol for arrest and possible deportation after they were unable to produce ID.
According to a family member, one of two people held may have been deported following the incident.
