Jean V. (Hooley) Merola, 90, formerly of Schwartz Towers, Auburn, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon Aug. 18, 2017 at Finger Lakes Center For Living.
She was born in Carthage, N.Y, the daughter of the late Eugene and Martha Wahl Hooley, and had resided in the Harrisville, N.Y. area until high school graduation. Jean was a communicant of St. Alphonsus Church. Prior to her retirement, Jean spent many years in food service, working at the Cayuga County Nursing Home, Holiday Inn and Auburn Community Hospital. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and an occasional trip to one of our local casinos. Jean cherished all the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know this special woman.
She is survived by her loving children: daughter, Teresa Testa and her husband, Daniel A. Jr., of Auburn; son, David Merola and his wife, Sherry, of NC; three grandchildren, Madison Merola, Daniel (Amy) A. Testa III and Karen (Jamie) Carr; five great-grandchildren; Ralph Merola, of Auburn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Ripley, and four brothers, Arlington, Robert, Maurice and Neil Hooley.
Friends and relatives are invited to join the family at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at St. Alphonsus Church for Jean’s Mass of Christian burial. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Pettigrass Funeral Home, 196 Genesee St., Auburn, NY 13021.
The family would like any contributions to be made in Jean’s memory to Finger Lakes Center For Living, 20 Park Ave., Auburn, NY 13021, due to their exceptional care and compassion that was shown to Jean during her stay.
