A guilty plea in Cayuga County Court on Wednesday brought an end to a lengthy Workers Compensation fraud investigation by the offices of state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott and Cayuga County DA Jon Budelmann. Budelmann tells Finger Lakes News Radio 54-year old David Sigl will be sentenced in November.
Sigl was charged with fraudulently collecting $83,000 in benefits after reporting in 2013 that he was injured while working for a Syracuse construction firm. He later filed reports with the Workers’ Compensation Board saying he wasn’t working but investigators found him running his own logging business with two employees. In an ironic twist, Sigl also pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of not providing his employees with workers comp coverage.
