Francis “Al” Timian, 96, passed away on Aug. 7, 2017.
He was born in Utica, N.Y., the son of the late Clarence Albert and Ella Henzler Timian. He grew up in New Hartford and graduated from New Hartford High School. He came to Auburn in 1938 to work for Dunn & McCarthy Shoe Company. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving at Great Lakes, Ill., Pearl Harbor, and aboard ship in the Pacific.
Returning to Auburn and Dunn & McCarthy, he was plant superintendent for many years and then general superintendent over factories in Auburn and Binghamton. He retired in 1983 as vice president of manufacturing after more than 40 years of service. Soon after retiring from Dunn & McCarthy, he went to work as a court attendant at Cayuga County Court House where he worked for more than 20 years.
Al was a member of SS. Peter and John Episcopal Church where he had served as a Vestryman, Warden and Treasurer of the Sunday school for many years. He was a former member of the YMCA and its board of directors. He was a former member of the Board at Dunn & McCarthy, Inc., and the Emerson Foundation.
Al was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis, on Jan. 8, 2005; his sister, Eleanor Brock, in 1972, and his daughter-in-law, Mary Timian, in 2009.
He is survived by three children, Janis Rennie (Donald), of West Yarmouth, Mass., Richard Timian (Maureen), of Auburn, and Dr. Peter Timian, of Newton, Pa.; four grandchildren, John Timian (Sarahanne), of Scotia, N.Y., Janis Baker (Michael), of Skaneateles, Tracy Gerhart (Scott), of Southampton, Pa., and Megan Timian, of Newton, Pa.; three great-grandchildren, Luke and Owen Timian, and Grace Baker. He is also survived by two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation.
