The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has concluded it internal investigation into how an inmate escaped from the jail back in July.
25-year old Shawn Meachum spent about 10 hours on the run before he was captured on Anstee Road in town of Galen. Meacham impersonated a weekend inmate who was scheduled for release and walked out of the facility.
Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says as a result of the investigation, a shift sergeant resigned to avoid disciplinary action. The housing officer and booking room officer were each given a 40-day suspension without pay. The main control officer was given a 10-day suspension without pay.
Virts, in a release yesterday, said he was extremely disappointed in the complacency and lack of attention to detail by each officer involved in the incident.
Meacham was being held for violating conditions of his probation related to a burglary conviction.

Administrative Investigation of Meacham Escape
Having concluded an internal investigation into the escape of inmate Meachum, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has concluded that the escape should have been immediately detected and prevented by the officers responsible for his supervision.
The escape was only made possible because the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Jail Facility policies, procedures and protocols were not followed, which directly led to the absconding of Inmate Meachum on July 2, 2017.
As a result, the shift sergeant resigned during the administrative investigation to avoid disciplinary action for his neglect of duty.
The housing officer and booking room officer have been served their Notice of Discipline for their neglect of duty and will serve a forty (40) working day suspension without pay. Their discipline will also require that they enter into a “Last Chance Agreement” for a period of three (3) years.
The main control officer has been served his Notice of Discipline for his neglect of duty and will serve a ten (10) working day suspension without pay.
Inmate Shawn Meachum has been criminally charged with Escape in the first degree, Penal Law Section 205.15 and is presently being held in the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Jail Facility without bail.
I am extremely disappointed in the complacency and lack of attention to detail by each officer involved in this incident, however, we will move forward as a team so this does not happen again.
In keeping with the spirit of New York State Civil Rights Law § 50-a, which requires the confidentiality of law enforcement personnel records, I will not be naming the correction officers involved.
