An incoming Cornell University freshman drowned while swimming in Fall Creek in Ithaca Saturday.
Police were dispatched to the falls around 2:30 p.m. for reports a person had entered the gorge waters but had not surfaced. Winston Samuel-Perez’s body was located about five hours later by a New York State Dive Team. According to the University, the Bronx teen was in Ithaca with fellow incoming students participating in the on-campus pre-freshman summer program and was planning to study at the university’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning.
Ithaca police remind everyone of the dangers of hiking and swimming in the Gorges, where strong currents and slipping shale are ever present
