Well, it’s happened again…a long time broadcaster that you’ve watched for years will no longer be there. Channel 10 meteorologist Kevin Williams, who’s been on our stations for ages, won’t be on TV anymore. The reasons for this haven’t been given, but as a person who’s been doing this for a while, I can make some inferences and observations based on the state of the industry today, and the outlook is pretty stormy, pun fully intended. The trend in this day and age is for big companies to look purely at bottom line…doesn’t matter how skilled a person is, their loyalty, or their popularity…if they can be replaced by someone making half as much, the trigger’s pulled and away they go. That’s why moronic mealy-mouthed simpletons like Ryan Seacrest have replaced hundreds of local DJ’s at stations around the country…it’s cheaper…but cheaper is by no means better. Because these corporate monoliths are run by a bunch of bean counters who want to make sure the CEO’s get their fat quarterly bonuses, everything is a numbers game to them…what they fail to realize is that people develop an attachment to what’s familiar and enjoyable, and replacing that with something in most cases causes people to switch over to a competitor. Change in broadcasting is inevitable…but change for the sake of saving a buck is foolish, short sighted, and in the long run, winds up costing you more bucks than you save. Hope Channel 10 enjoys the deafening sound of people changing the channel.
