Governor Andrew Cuomo made a stop at Watkins Glen International Thursday to announce the village of Watkins Glen will receive 10 million dollars in downtown revitalization project money. Mayor Sam Schimizzi said this is welcoming news.
State Senator Tom O’Mara says the area deserves the funding.
Watkins Glen was selected following a competitive process conducted by the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council. The award provides up to 300-THOUSAND dollars in planning funds to allow private-sector experts to partner with a local planning committee in the drafting of a Strategic Investment Plan identifying specific economic development, transportation, and housing and community projects. Plans are expected to be completed by early 2018.
According to the state website, Governor Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative is transforming downtown neighborhoods into vibrant communities where the next generation of New Yorkers will want to live, work and raise families. The program is in its second year.
