Anthony Thompson, a member of the Class of 2017 at Dundee Central School, has been awarded the Ruth Soules Scholarship. Ruth (Allen) Soules’ family established the scholarship in her memory to be awarded to a Dundee Central School graduate planning to pursue a career in nursing or other health care-related field. Thompson will be studying nursing at Finger Lakes Community College, Canandaigua.
During his high school career, Thompson has been involved in the Dundee Music Boosters, the Dundee Sports Boosters, and participated in the Yates County Christmas for the Needy program. He was employed at Veraisons at Glenora Winery.
The $1,000, one-year scholarship memorializes Ruth Soules who received her licensed practical nursing (LPN) degree from the Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing at Geneva General Hospital, Geneva. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Dundee Central School graduate who plans to attend the Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing in Geneva, or secondarily, another nursing school, or thirdly, pursuing another health care related career.
The scholarship, which is administered through the Finger Lakes Health Foundation, is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, participation in school and community activities, commitment to a career in healthcare services and recommendations.
After earning her LPN, Soules went on to a 35-year nursing career at Schuyler Hospital, Montour Falls, working on the floors, in the emergency room and the operating room. She was also active in the Dundee Central High School PTA, Girl Scouting, the Rock Stream Presbyterian Church and the American Red Cross.

FLH Foundation Presents Kitty Wigsten Award
The Finger Lakes Health Foundation presented a member of the Penn Yan Academy Class of 2017, Brooke Dinehart, with the Kitty Wigsten Memorial Scholarship.
The one-year scholarship is awarded to a graduating Penn Yan senior who plans to pursue career studies in healthcare services. The scholarship is sponsored by the Finger Lakes Health Foundation and is funded through gifts given in memory of Katherine “Kitty” Wigsten who served Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years as a nurse, manager and administrative team member.
The award recipient, Brooke Dinehart, plans to pursue a career in nursing. She intends to attend the Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
During her high school career, Dinehart was recognized at Academic Excellence Day for maintaining a 90 plus GPA. She was named a New York State Scholar Athlete for all three sports seasons, when she played volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. She also was inducted into the World Language National Honor Society. She was a member of the Debate Club, Pep Club, Varsity Club, Girls’ Athletic Association, Bio-Med Club and the National Junior Honor Society. She served as treasurer of her senior class.
In the community, she helped do flood cleanup in May 2014; helped with Penn Yan Youth Basketball and was an Elks Hoop Shoot volunteer. She assisted with the Penn Yan Academy Athletic Hall of Fame dinner for four years and volunteered for the Yates Christmas Program.
Dinehart works at Eastview Veterinary Clinic and previously worked at Penn Yan School District as a summer employee.
