The Owasco Yacht Club swimming beach has been reopened after tests showed an acceptable level of microcystins from blue green algal blooms spotted last week.
Cayuga County Health Department Environmental Health Director Eileen O’Connor tells Finger Lakes News Radio samples were taken 24 hours after the algal bloom dissipated, but on Cayuga Lake, the Wells College Dock beach in Aurora and the Frontenac Park beach in Union Springs remain closed.
She adds they may get good news later today.
The US Environmental Protection Agency over the winter reduced the acceptable level of toxins in water samples. The Cayuga County Health Department previously used the benchmark of 10 parts per billion. Now, the agency is using the EPA’s recommendation of closing beaches at a detection level of 4 parts per billion.
