The record setting rain has not only led to flooding in much of Cayuga County, it’s also increasing the potential for blue green algal blooms in Owasco Lake. That’s the opinion of Professor John Halfman from the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart & William Smith Colleges.
He said following Tuesday’s meeting of the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council an extended dry spell would do little to reduce the potential for blooms.
Auburn and Owasco should be ready for a repeat of cyanobacteria reaching their water treatment plants. Owasco Town Supervisor Ed Wagner told the meeting the town’s temporary carbon treatment system could be up and running by next week. Auburn’s system could be operational by the second week of August.
