Upstate lawmakers are putting party politics aside as they call on President Trump to issue a disaster declaration in the wake of Lake Ontario flooding.
In a letter to the President sent last week, Representatives John Katko, Louise Slaughter, Claudia Tenney, Chris Collins and Elise Stefanik cited the record high water levels and flooding that has had a crippling impact across the eight-county southern shore of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
Federal law requires that the initial request come from a governor. Earlier this month Governor Cuomo officially requested that FEMA issue a major disaster declaration after it was determined the scope of the relief and response efforts were beyond the capability of the state.
The representatives say without federal support, local governments will continue to struggle to repair existing infrastructure and prepare for future flooding.
